Get With The Programme!Written by Denis Fourie
In today’s day and age with future job prospects for our children diminishing rapidly, we as parents need to teach our children how to be entrepreneurs so they might create their own successful businesses when they leave school. However, very few parents are successful entrepreneurs themselves, which begs the question on how and where can they get their children the training and guidance they need to become successful entrepreneurs in the future.
GIVE YOUR CHILD THE ADVANTAGE THEY NEED TO SUCCEED!
PROGRAMME STARTS End April 2016
For which age group is this programme?
The UpStart Programme has been developed for children between the ages of 10-18 to teach them the basic skills they need to become entrepreneurs. The programme will be split into 2 sections:
What does the course include?
Each Upstart Programme runs for 7-months, during which period your child will learn:
- Creating a business concept.
- Planning your business.
- Researching your target market.
- Costing your product or service.
- Presenting your business plan.
- Pitching to investors.
- Launching your product or service.
- Sales, marketing and negotiation skills.
- Growing your little enterprise.
- Importance of partnerships.
- Leadership and communication skills.
This is not all theory!
Each child will form part of a 2-3 person team, who will together, come up with one or multiple business concepts and form their own informal business. Together they will plan and research their target market and create a business plan. They will then have the opportunity to pitch that business plan at an event to parents, residents, and investors to get the money they need to launch their enterprise.
They will then launch their product or service at an open market day at Cedar Lakes Estate. They will further market their products and services to the community and at schools, learning sales and marketing skills along the way. The grand finale will be at the Christmas In July event at Cedar Lakes Estate, where the best performing in each category will receive a cash prize.
We will be getting experts giving age-appropriate advice in the fields of Marketing, Sales Skills, Negotiation Skills, Advertising, Business Planning and other entrepreneurs giving their own sage advice in thinking out of the business box.
The value is incalculable
Can you possibly calculate the value in your child learning practical skills that will forever help them in their lives, and potentially lead them to creating truly innovative and successful companies when they leave enter into the world?
What does this cost?
The cost of this programme is R1,990 per child, per month, over a 7-month period. Children can get sponsors to cover the monthly cost (101Biz.co.za will supply the sponsor with information if required).
Note: Organisers are happy to reduce this cost should sufficient number of children or sponsors invest in or join the programme.
What additional investment is required?
Each parent or sponsor will need to contribute a minimum of R1,500 once-off investment into the child’s business, which will be used by the child to start his/her business.
Once the business planning has been done, the children will pitch their business concept to parents, friends, residents, or investors for any further investment they might require, in exchange for equity in their business.
When and where will it be held?
It will be held every 2nd Saturday morning, from 08h30 – 12h00, at the Cedar Lakes Offices, Cedar Lakes Estate, Cedar Blvd, Broadacres, Johannesburg.
School holidays and public holidays are taken into account, and the programme is scheduled to accomodate these.
In cases where the children are required to go sell their products, additional time may be required on certain dates which will be communicated to parents in advance.
